05 / Needle Gauges at Scale

Why higher numbers mean thinner needles

Practitioner-facing reference compiled from peptide handling and pharmacology literature.

Higher gauge = thinner needle. The number descends from a 19th-century wire-drawing scale where the digit counted draw-passes through progressively smaller dies: more passes, thinner wire, higher number. So a 31G needle (the finest in common peptide work) was drawn 31 times, while a 22G recon needle was drawn only 22.

Gauge reference

Birmingham Gauge specification: outer diameter, inner diameter, wall thickness, and standard hub color for the gauges most relevant to peptide work.

GaugeOuter diameterInner diameterWallHub colourReported use
22G0.718 mm0.413 mm0.152 mmBlackReconstitution / BAC water transferWide bore for fast bacteriostatic-water draws and lyophilized-vial pushes. Standard recon ceiling: bigger isn't faster for liquids this thin, and a coarser bore just punches a wider hole through the vial stopper.
25G0.515 mm0.26 mm0.127 mmOrangeLarge-volume IMComfortable middle ground for intramuscular pushes above ~1 mL, wide enough to clear viscous oil-based or freshly reconstituted material without stalling, narrow enough to avoid bruising the muscle.
27G0.413 mm0.21 mm0.102 mmMedium grayBackup recon / occasional IMA reasonable substitute when a 22G recon needle isn't on hand, and the floor for one-off IM injections that need slightly more bore than a standard SQ needle delivers.
29G0.337 mm0.184 mm0.076 mmRedSC ceiling for higher-viscosity peptidesTop of the subcutaneous range. Thick reconstitutions (high concentration, low BAC volume) sometimes refuse to draw cleanly through 30G or 31G; 29G keeps the stick comfortable while restoring flow.
30G0.312 mm0.159 mm0.077 mmYellowStandard SC dosingThe default for most peptide work. Comfortable enough that a slow stick is barely felt, narrow enough to dose accurately on a 30-unit barrel, common enough to find in any pharmacy or research-supply order.
31G0.261 mm0.133 mm0.064 mmWhiteComfort SC for thin peptidesFinest gauge in routine peptide use. Reported for thin, low-concentration reconstitutions where flow isn't an issue, ideal for daily microdoses where the comfort difference adds up over weeks.
